If you do not have one available, make a quiet place in your home, be sure to hold in your hand a cross blessed by a priest for the purpose of doing the stations and devote the next 25 minutes to pray the\u00a0Way of the Cross.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><strong>I.<\/strong>\u00a0A plenary indulgence each time.<\/em><br \/><em> <strong>II.\u00a0<\/strong>Additional plenary indulgence if one receives Holy Communion the same day; or if after making Stations ten times, one receives within a month.<\/em><br \/><em> <strong>III.\u00a0<\/strong>Ten years and ten quarantines for each Station, when for a reasonable cause one cannot complete the series.<\/em><br \/><em> These indulgences are extended also to the\u00a0sick, travelers at sea, prisoners, those living where there is no Catholic church, and all others who, for some acceptable reason, are unable to make the Stations, provided that, with contrition of heart and sincere devotion, they recite twenty times the Our Father, the Hail Mary and the Glory be (that is, once for each Station, five times in honor of the Five Wounds of our Lord, and once for the intentions of our Holy Father, the Pope [or for the intentions of Holy Mother Church, if we are in a state of Sede Vacante]) and that they hold in their hands a crucifix blessed by one who has the faculty to do so. Those who for good reasons cannot recite the above prayers for the gaining of the plenary indulgence, can gain a partial indulgence of ten years and ten times 40 days for each time they recite the Our Father, the Hail Mary and the Glory be.<\/em><br \/><em> If anyone because of illness cannot do more than kiss, or gaze devoutly upon a crucifix blessed for this purpose and held by a priest or other person, and recite some short prayer or ejaculation in honor of the passion and death of our Lord; and even if such a one is unable to recite any prayer, the plenary indulgence can be gained.<\/em><br \/><em> (S. Pardon me, my God, and permit me to accompany Thee on this journey. Thou goest to die for love of me; I wish also, my beloved Redeemer, to die for love of Thee. Among its symptoms were a turning black of the tongue, parching of the throat, violent headache, fever and boils on the abdomen. The malady attacked its victims without warning, robbed them of reason and killed them within a few hours, and many died without the last Sacraments. fear caused many attacks and disrupted social and family ties. To all appearances the disease was incurable.<\/p>\n<p>During this affliction, the pious turned toward Heaven, having recourse to the Saints, praying to be spared or cured. Among the Saints invoked were these 14 who already had patronage over certain illnesses or tragedies:<\/p>\n<p>St. Christopher and St. Giles, plagues, St. Denis, headaches, St. Blaise, ills of the throat [although St. Ignatius of Antioch is also a patron of those with sore throats], St. Elmo, patron of abdominal maladies [and one of the several Saints having patronage over childbirth, which is not an illness, of course, as well as patron of sailors], St. Barbara, against fever, St. Vitus, [with St. Dymphna, against epilepsy], St. Pantaleon, patron of physicians, St. Cyriacus, recourse in time of temptations, especially at the hour of death; Sts. Christopher, Barbara, and Catherine were appealed to for protection against a sudden, unprovided death; the aid of St. Giles was implored for making a good confession; St. Eustace, patron of all kinds of difficulties, especially family troubles. Domestic animals were also attacked by the plague: Sts. George, Erasmus, Pantaleon and Vitus were invoked for their protection. St. Margaret of Antioch is the patron of safe childbirth deliveries [along with St.Gerard Majella and Raymond Nonnantus].
